Welcome to Honeysuckle Markets

After eight glorious busy community filled years Honeysuckle Markets closed on Sunday 30 March 2008. The Honeysuckle Railway Workshops are to become the future home of the Newcastle Regional Museum and are now to commence the process of renovation and refit.

This is a sad day for all of Newcastle - Customers, Visitors and Stallholders.

We have built:

  • unique community asset,
  • an economic dynamic
  • a tourism asset
  • thriving harbourside pedestrian economy which provides flow on benefits to other precinct businesses
  • founded Slow Food Hunter from this market
  • Judged fine food & dairy for Sydney Royal Agricultural Society annually for 6 years
  • Hosted hundreds of local charities and community events
  • Hosted hundreds of musical and cultural events
  • Hosted many educational events
  • Raised $135,000 over last three years for Eva House Programme @ Mayumarri ( this programme would not exist without our support)
  • Provided jobs, education and social networks
  • Business Incubator - Provided start up for new business

We could have achieved so much more - as a partnered outdoor activity for the new Newcastle Regional Museum we offered annual pedestrian traffic of 250,000 people to this tiny micro economy. We were the first in the precinct; the least valued and the first to be dispensed with.

Our beautiful city deserved better than this and so did we as a market community. THIS IS NEWCASTLE'S LOSS!!

I leave with a sense of failure, underachievement and frustration.
